Steven Hassan was recruited by the Unification Church (Moonies) when he was in college. He became a leader in the cult, and developed a personal relationship with the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and others. After a car accident where he was seriously injured, the Moonies sent him to the home of a family member to recuperate. Here, while immobilized by a cast from his toes to his hip, Hassan met with a cult deprogrammer, and decided to leave the Moon cult.
