AMOs: The Nightmare Builders Site Closes Down

In July, 1999, Amway subpoenaed the Ashley Wilkes' hard drive for the second time. Wilkes is the author of the site AMOs: The Nightmare Builders. While attempting to prove a nonexistent conspiracy, Amway is seeking to intimidate and silence its critics by using -- some would say abusing -- the legal process to destroy them financially. Given that the critics are individuals of modest means, and Amway is a multi-billion dollar corporation, Amway has the ability to simply wear down anyone it chooses to attack.

Nightmare Builders has been the longest-running site critical of the Amway Motivational Organizations.

Wilkes was a distributor for four years. He plugged in to the system, followed his upline's instructions, and worked hard. The result? A marriage in tatters, a family fractured, finances in ruins, and a determination to spread the word and help others avoid the pain he had endured. His website chronicled his experiences with the WWDB and ILD organizations.

Nightmare Builders has been instrumental in educating the public about the abusive nature of the motivational organizations, and in really pinpointing for the first time the differences between Amway Corp. and the distributor organizations.

In addition to his personal experiences, Wilkes posted many transcripts of meetings and Amvox (voicemail) messages, as well as information on financial dealings within the AMO, deceptive mind control and its effect on marriage and family, and the way Christianity is used by the AMOs.

In an announcement posted on the internet, Wilkes explains:

"I, Ashley Wilkes, author of Amway Motivational Organizations (AMO's): The Nightmare Builders, have abandoned cyberspace as my particular vehicle to get the truth out about AMO's. AMO's are entities LEGALLY separate from the Amway Corporation.

"Since I was served my first subpoena from the Amway Corporation on February 10th of this year, I have endured months of legal manuevers that I felt were in defense of attacks on my first amendment rights to free speech, privacy and assembly. However, the concomitant drain on my emotions and finances has left me no choice but to retreat from the front lines in cyberspace."

A mirror copy of the site can still be found.
