Re: Zig Ziglar MLM This isn't about something I read on your site, but about an email I rec'd earlier today. Apparently Zig Ziglar, a motivational tools guru, just went MLM. I just figured you might want to know. I wonder if it will turn out to be a scam.
Hello! I just discovered your site. I have a business idea for an MLM and would like to find out more statistics on the different MLM (i.e. how many independent sales consultants they have, average number of independents by state, average income from MLM sales, etc.) Can you recommend some additional sources? Do you have any recommended reading for starting an MLM? Thanks for your advice - it is truly valuable!
Dear Ruth, The information on your website has been very helpful in learning the truth about Amway and AMO's. I am also researching Excel Communications, but have found very little on the internet about them. Would appreciate any info you could share. Thanks,
Greetings: As an active member of the MLM community I want to thank you for your time and energy spent here. The fraudulent mlm com. hurt the industry and the people I'm trying to help. I am a Coordinator with Shaklee Corp. the oldest MLM co. Shaklee still operates under the Golden Rule. I just found this site an hour ago and have lots yet to see, but wanted to pause and say thanks... Thanks for your reply......it was interesting the pervasive sexual overtones/predatory nature, considering they all aspired to Napolean Hill and the whole Think and Grow Rich philosophy, which clearly refers to the fact that suppressing sexual urges gives one focus (also in Dale Carnegie)....I guess they only read the parts they wanted to hear!! Thanks again for your site....
Dear Ruth: My name is John Doe (not real name) and I am an IBO. I think this business is an incredible opportunity for people to own their own business and achieve success, but it does take a lot of work. A lot of hard work. Nothing in life is easy. If it was, you wouldn't respect it anyway. You want to earn it. I have been an IBO since September of 1998. I have put a lot of time in the business, but I have never followed ALL of the 8 core steps at once. I have done 3 out of 8, but never all 8 at once. It is March of 2000 and I have been in the business for one year and half and have decided to not pursue the business anymore. I am 23 years old and want to be a successful college basketball coach. I just got a coaching position to be a grad assistant at a small Division I school. I'm really excited about this and I love basketball and helping others succeed at it. I think Amway/Quixtar is a great business. I don't think it is for everyone, but I think it does have something to offer everyone. I do plan to still be a member and buy the SA8 and Double X vitamins. I feel these are phenomenal products and I enjoy having them delivered to my door. The biggest thing I fear is telling my best friend who is in my downline that I'm not going to be an IBO anymore...at least an active IBO. I just don't know what to tell him. We've been friends for almost 21 years and both of us are only 23 years old. My heart has never been in the Quixtar business. I just left a message on my upline AMVOX that my heart just isn't in the business anymore. I just don't have the desire to build this right now. I'm young, 23 and really don't need the extra income right now. I'm not a millionaire, but I don't have any debts. I've never been motivated by money, but I'm not motivated by car payments either. Please help? I don't how to tell him. Hope to hear from you.
As a company with a profit motive, I think the term is "buyer beware". I would not expect them to publish opposing views. Your site, on the other hand, exists to present people with the facts about these type of companies. Or am I mistaken ?
Hi, Ruth-- I was interested to find the site luvnlife.com and see that Sheri Sharman, who was once Bill Gouldd's right-hand woman (with NSA and Equinox) has started up her own MLM-type system. This one is all "automatic"--it looks like everything is done through phone number messages and websites. But although water filters and other products are briefly mentioned, the bulk of the information is about how to sponsor other people. Looks like another pyramid scheme. Interesting how several of the top Equinox people left in frustration, only to start their own companies so they could be the top dog. Blech!
Dear Ruth, This is * from Malaysia. Recently I had forwarded (about two weeks ago) your December letter of the month to my upline and upline Gold Producer for their information as I find the letters from the writer is a very informative one which traces a staunch AMO progress in seeking the truth about AMO. I am no longer a "dreamchaser" now as I've woke up from the zombie-state but I still maintain contact with my upline who has been a childhood friend. But just yesterday, I received a e-mail from my Direct Distributor telling me that I shouldn't be spreading negatives to people who what to pursue their dreams. I thought I ought to share with you and get your advise before I do something foolish like writing back and telling off, probably in capital letters. I have always respected him as a friend and admired his oratory skills but this e-mail shows his ignorance of the Internet and people in general. Now he says the tapes, books & functions are optional - and he's calling me a liar - but back then, I remember very clearly he had 'strongly' suggested that we need the "wisdom" from these tools to be successful. Even insist that I go to Australia for the Spring Extravanganza, etc etc. Guess he is playing with words now. Do give me your advise as I felt very strongly to really tell him off. I thank you. What about the NY Times article about Quixtar being #5 in the on-line Dept Store area?
Dear Survivor, First off, let me tell you that I am a current Quixtar IBO. Second, let me tell you that I *do not* buy into the hype. I realize that most of the money in this business is made by the promotional sales. That's one reason I don't buy more than I need of them. I buy a book, here or there, that sounds good to me, not that I was told "You have to buy this book!" I am on standing order, and I consider them to be motivational, because normally I am an introverted person, and I need that kick to get me to go out and say "Hi!" to someone now and again. I also lug a salt lick with me when I go to functions. Grain my eye! The talk of "I bought this with my profits" and "I did that to my house" tells me nothing about how to get there. It is motivational, and to me, pretty much crap on a stick. There are people who do make it big in this business, and there are those, like you, who don't. It's less a matter of skill and more a matter of timing and luck. I would say that it is halfway between buying a lottery ticket and starting your own brick and mortar business. Considering the investment, I can't start a brick and mortar, and a lottery ticket has far to few winners for me to feel justified in buying one. As far as who is involved in the business, concerning your articles on Kevin Trudeau et al. If they tell me to do something immoral or illegal, if they are in my upline, I will not do it, simple as that. I am sorry about your experience. I have heard similar stories from other sources and I do not blame you for that failure. I may fail at it myself, but I will do my best, as I am sure that you did. As far as who is involved in the business, concerning your articles on Kevin Trudeau et al. If they tell me to do something immoral or illegal, if they are in my upline, I will not do it, simple as that. Thank you for your site, as it gives me a bit of reflection on my decision. The one thing that turned me on to this business, the one thing that stands out in my mind, and the reason I joined this one rather than the several others that had approached me(all within a short period of time, strangely enough) was because I can see myself selling those same tapes and books someday. As many have stated, that is where the money is. It is not duping people, at least not in my line. They pay for motivation, and they get it. That is the product that Amway and Quixtar sells. Soap is all well and good, but sometimes people like being told there is a possibility of wealth, that hope that there is something better out there than working behind a desk for forty years. And so, I entered into this business with my eyes and ears open, not only to read the books and listen to the tapes, but to read between the lines and listen to who people are. I am in the business of hope. It is not important to me who my "merchant partners" are, nor if big bad Amway is there like a father figure, telling me what I can and can't do. I am here to help those who want something better from themselves. I know, I know, I sound like a comercial. But let me tell you about myself. My name is *. I am 22 years old, and recently married. My wife is 29. Until November of last year, I worked as a computer technician for a local computer recycling firm. I loved my work, got paid pretty well to do it, and enjoyed going to work in the morning. I was the kind of person that would occasionaly brind donuts in for the company(all 15 of us!). I was happy. Sure, the vice president liked to yell and insult every so often, but he really wasn't a bad guy. Then, my boss quit. The man who had really brought me into the business, got me started with it, was tired of getting yelled at. Understandable. Then they hired his replacement. A man named Dale, who was a lying, coniving, cheating SOB who felt it was his job to make the techs look bad. I went from being the head tech to being a test tech in about six months, and then I turned in my two week notice. I took a $2 an hour and a 10 hour a week cut to get out of there. It was heaven turned hell for me. I now sit behind a kiosk in the mall, selling and repairing watches. I would consider it to be purgatory. Then a man stopped by and noticed I was reading a book on Linux. From there, it was two months before I got my IBO number. I like this business. I like helping people. It does wonders for my karma. If they seem like the type who would not do well in this business, I sign them up as members or clients. Or I leave them alone. Simple as that. If they say no, if I know them well, I take it as "Talk to me when you make money." If they say no, and I don't know them, I say ok and take it as a no. Enough of that. The entire business structure of the world is based on duping people into buying things that business has told them they *need* rather than *want*. It is nice to be in a business that says to the consumer, "Ok, everyone else has convinced you that you *need* these things. Now, we'd like to pay you for buying them. Oh, by the way, here's a book that will make you feel good about yourself. And here's a tape that will motivate you to getting off that couch and going out and saying hi to people and teach them how to get paid for what they buy. Oh, and you get a bit of cash off that, too!" Most businesses pay you to be back stabbing and close-lipped to your co-workers, unless you want them to get ahead of you. It is like a race. In this business, you help people below you, you get a check in the mail. Yes, there are those who have a bad experience. There are those, like my mother, who were put off by the wife of the guy presenting the program to her and her husband putting a fur coat accross the bed of her guest room. There are those who could not get people interested in the program. There are those who went about it the wrong way and had a finger waggled at them by Amway. There are those who joined "get rich quick" groups, and yes, the head of the group got rich quick by ripping people off. To be given a chance to succeed, rather than being told you can't, is worth the money I have put down. Being told that I am worth something is worth the money I spend on tapes and books. Hey, the church has been doing it for how long? And half the time they tell you that you are going to hell! To add another spin on things, I am a pagan who belongs to a local hearth(read coven). I do not buy into the religious hype in Amway, which I am surprised you did not cover. I know it is a sticky issue, but at the last function I went to, on Sunday morning, when the Christians got the main hall(surprise surprise!) and the Muslems and the Jews had their gatherings, I spent the time walking around Downtown Lexington, KY. Nice town. No, Quixtar is not for everyone. Neither is a McDonald's franchise, or a telemarketing biz, or owning your own restaraunt(Okay, I know my spelling is awful!). It takes money, and there is the chance of failure. This is true of any business. So far, I have not been promised anything. I have been told that the average monthly income of an IBO from the business is $88. That's not much money. But, of course, that is an average. I'm sorry I have tired your eyes making you read all of this, if you have made it this far. On a final note, let me just say that I am having fun with this business, and I know that it is not everything it's cracked up to be. It could be worse. I could be a politician. Same type of business, save the product is not worth even a tenth of what you pay for it. Husband, Son and Friend first, IBO second.
First and formost, I feel badly for what you have gone through. There are some questions I'd like to ask you. Are you grouping all organizations of Amway Corporation together (all 14-16)? Or can you be specific about which organizations you are describing. Do you believe in God? Honestly?
Hi, I got scammed by Equinox too. I've got over it and I think Bill Goulld is worthless son of a bitch. However, when equinox started in 1991, I wish you and me could have been looking over our shoulder to another company called USANA that started in 1992. I recently got involved and kick myself in the ass a hundred times now for not joining USANA rather than Equinot. This company has proved itself time and time again, through the quality of their products, survived the 36 month business test, and are on an upward stage of being one of the top companies in the world someday. Don't get me wrong, I was skeptical as hell at first, I didn't want nothing to do with it. I grilled my sponsor at 3 business presentations until I knew this was a network marketing company that is going to succeed. You don't have to invest 5g or 25g to line the pockets of others. I spent a merely $252 do receive my product and distributor kit. Compared to $2500+$???????? for those stupid fuckin seminars by equinot. I tried the product and it does make a difference. USANA is a company committed to everyone's heatlth not just making money. If you are interested please send me a email at * Thank you.
Good afternoon Ruth. Do you have any information concerning a company putting together web site for big bucks called Galaxy Mall? Have friends that are now into them for thousands of dollars and are very unhappy. Please let me know and even though "not" a mlm a person could make money if they bring their friends to Galaxy Mall. Thanks again Your doing a great job
I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH TWO MLM COMPANIES IN THE PAST(QUARUM AND USANA). I WAS LEFT WITH A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH BOTH TIMES AND SWORE OFF MLM. NOW, MY GIRLFRIEND HAS BEEN APPROACHED BY 'SKYBIZ'. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN TELL ME ABOUT THIS COMPANY?
Good Day: I wish to go on record regarding my personal experience with Skybiz 2000 and also to help lighten the load your site has dumped on them. I am an Old Age Pensioner, living in Canada, trying to survive on an inflation-riddled pension that is quite inadequate. If my wife and I wished only to eat, sleep and watch TV our income would be sufficient, but we are both in good health and want a little more than that. Over the last 5 years I have tried Quorum, Melaleuca, Nikkon, ACN, Golden Circle and Skybiz 2000. Of the lot, I had made money (until Skybiz) only with Golden Circle which is an out-and-out pyramid, beyond all doubt. The Better Business Bureau finally made it difficult for us and we abandoned the idea. Probably a good thing! Until I joined Skybiz at Christmas I had put in many hours, spent "beaucoup de dollars" on products I still have (they are in my will for my children), went to endless meetings and made no money. My upline "seemed to be making some" but I have my doubts because they are now looking very closely at my little enterprise. At age 73, I look back over the last 50 years I spent in business and I regret that Network Marketing took so long to become an acceptable way to market goods and services. If one approaches Network Marketing the way I have (I'm no genius!) it makes sense and provides a delightful way to make a couple of bucks (not megabucks) to help the standard of living. I work 4 or 5 hours a week with my downline and so far I have made more money than I made with my last 3 MLM's combined; I don't have to leave the house; there is no paperwork to get bogged down in and the websites are very simple to construct. I can help almost anyone do it with a little effort. The mathematical model of my future tells me that by July 2000, if I continue in the same mode, I will have an income of about $300-400 US per week (about 5-6 hundred Canadian) and then I have the option to continue working or just coast and have a better lifestyle with perhaps some money for my grandchildren's college tuition. What in the world is wrong with this scenario? Am I being exploited? Am I hurt? Have I caused pain for my clients (downline)? NO, of course not!!! The Canadian government things I'm great because I'm now another tax payer, not consuming gasoline, not riding the transit to work, just staying at home making some extra change!!! The icing is that I'm living a fuller life, I have other interests than my arthritis and I'm once again a contributing citizen, helping others lift themselves up. I'm damn proud of that. I don't want to appear negative or too critical of you, because I'm sure in your wisdom, you see beyond my little horizon and have information about MLM that I don't have. Maybe you have "saved a few souls" but please be careful not to cause pain yourself to people like me by printing things too hastily or using "too broad a brush" in your condemnation. I'm sure, from reading your story, you know the cut of the MLM whip and you perhaps have good reason to knock, but I have a suggestion for you, that I ask you to take seriously in your crusades. It is true that MLM's are promulgated by dangling carrots in front of gullible people who think they can be the super stars, but if they only knew, and thought about it logically, there can only be a handful of top performers in any company. People must be prepared for a little bit less, and if they are, they will have some success. This way, everyone can become a winner. Now for my suggestion. Why not take on the real pain-dealers in your crusade? Take on Bill Gates who shamelessly and cruelly makes an obsene amount of money and leaves a lot of agony in his wake. Take on the banks whose CEO's make millions a year in sheltered income. Take on the government, that sanctions lotteries on a State, Provincial or National level and causes lots and lots of hardship by advertising a life-style obtainable through winning an impossible lottery. These people are the villians cloked in respectibility but you and others will not touch them because they are too powerful. Nobody has the resources to take them on. People like me, trying to supplement a starvation income are very easy targets because we are vulnerable and can't fight back. You're like Don Quixote fighting windmills because you lack the courage to tilt with real dragons. Please print this so that I may make a little contribution to the positive side of Network Marketing and perhaps help a few people adjust their thinking to grass root levels and not try to be "filthy stinking rich" with MLM opportunities. In a free enterprise society there will always be the super stars (who by the way, work 20 hours a day at it) and we have to make room for them. They don't take up any more space than we do and there is plenty of space for all of us. Of the 250 million people in the USA, how many are President, even though the American dream is, "anyone can be President", the truth being that anyone cannot be President but they can be important in a lesser role. Because of accident of birth I can never be Prime Minister of Canada even though I consider myself more intelligent and capable than he is. So be it. Thank you for listening. P.S. If you wish I would like to send you (via Internet) an excellent video clip about Network Marketing and how it has been legitimatized by Harvard Business School.
Is this online mall scheme legal? Hope all is going well with you and yours. I'm just about in the middle of your "AMO" book. "GREAT BOOK" Please send a copy to the FTC. The reason I write, my sister is involved in "FreeLife". Do you have any info on them?? I checked out there site, pure MLM. Do you know if the do the "BSM" crap like Amway?? Thanks, i just wanted to say you are revengeful and negative. i've spent money but i'm farther ahead, stronger, smarter, and more successful than ever. the elements i learned about being exited, sitting up, edifying and so forth have helped me in many aspects of life and made in richer and fuller. teaching others to blame for their failures is a cop out. i wish you peace. it really wasnt that bad. Do you find this true of all mlm's? I just wonder and it sure does make me nervous since I just entetered into a "home based business" selling nutritional supplements, make-up, etc., etc. I must say that I have used the products and believe in the ones I use. I do question the "pyramid" and all. I do have doubts, and fears and wonder if I should be doing this. How can I check out a company's background or find out if how they do this is on the up and up. Of course they claim they are not doing the pyramid thing and try to show you why this is true but in the end I still see a pyramid. Any suggestions? Hi, I've been an active distributor for five years, not in Amway, another company. I've reached the point of saying maybe it is time to quit. But I think the "you can't win if you quit" theory is thoroughly ingrained into my psyche. If I hadn't worked the business, if I hadn't done all I was asked to do, that would be one thing. But I have worked it! 3-ways, 2-on-1's, 1-on-1's, hundreds of tapes sent, web pages, thousands of phone calls, you name it I've done it. I've driven 3 hours for no shows more times than I care to remember or admit. The problem with NWM is that it is very dependent on other people's drive and doing what they say they are going to do. It isn't a hard business, nor do I believe it is a scam. If everyone would just do it we all would be fine. That is where the problem starts, people just won't do what they say they are going to do. If everyone would order the right amount of product and just do it is all it would take. I think deep down though, people are so used to working for someone they like it, regardless of how much they hate what they are doing. It is comfortable. I can't believe it hasn't worked though. I have recruited some very good people 9, 10's and 11's, but they've all quit. My expenses are about 4 times what I earn and the only way I can hope to recoup some of that is through home business tax deductions which doesn't amount to too much. Well, that's my story in a nutshell, I guess I'm looking for a place to vent. Thanks, P.S. You can reply, no recruitment though or you'll get a @#$% off!
I am writing to let you know that you are providing a critical and vital service with your web site and the information that you make available to the public. Before I ever joined "the business" I went to my local library to investigate the credibility of the opportunity that I was being offered. I read everything that I could find in their archives and contrasted it with the claims that were made by my sponsor-to-be. Based on the limited information available to me at the time I decided that this was a genuine opportunity to take advantage of global economic trends and become a part of the soon to be wealthy class of network builders. After quitting college to "invest" my time into this "fast track" to significance and success, I brought people that I genuinely care about into this thing and now they are as filled with regret (and debt) as I am. Were it not for the facts (yes the facts do matter, even if you have a dream) that I learned from your web site and others like it, I might still be pouring money into tools and wondering why everybody else was doing so well and I was the only one that wasn't building a large profitable business in a matter of a few short months. PLEASE DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THE THREATS OF LEGAL ACTION FROM OUR HEROES IN THE AMWAY BUSINESS! STAND FIRM IS MY PLEA! I still feel that there are many redeeming and valuable qualities in Network Twenty-one, but we must not let people be left in the dark about all of the realities and risks involved when someone decides to pursue the dream of being a multimillionaire through the Amway opportunity. My hope is that this kind of exposure will force Amway and its so called "Systems of Success" to reform or vanish out of existence as a new and informed public holds their feet to the fire and refuses to be exploited out of ignorance. It will be a tremendous gift if you could pressure them into becoming the kind of business that I was promised when I first saw "the plan." Thank you for letting the truth be known. I wish you the best of success.
My cousin was killed in a terrible car accident while he was trying to get his START with Equinox. He left a beautiful wife and 4 children behind... All because he believed a crooked and desperate man and his dreams of making $$$ by MLM. I have heard there are a few lawsuits being filed in Nevada and California and wanted to know if you know anything about them. I hope that Equinox learns its lessons and keeps others from "Killing" themselves trying to live out their (Equinox's) dreams.
Just wanted to know if you know anything about Renaissance: the Tax People...mlm company for reducing taxes...positive or negative. thanks
Hi!! Do you know whether Mannatech is or has been involved in any lawsuits? I'm pretty fed up with a close relative 'pushing' their products to my family and friends, with almost a religious fervor. The information at your site is educational to myself, and hopefully to her. I found several references to other MLM outfits being sued, but none for Mannatech. Thanks ahead if you have any info. ps: Let's hear it for good, honest hard work! |
