Renaissance, aka "The Tax People," Under Investigation in Kansas

The office of the Kansas Attorney General Carla J. Stovall is investigating Renaissance, also known as "The Tax People," as a possible illegal pyramid scheme. The company uses the names "Advantage International Marketing," and "The Tax System."

Michael Cooper, a principal in Renaissance, has had previous legal battles with the State of Kansas. On April 30, 1996, he entered into a consent agreement with Kansas. At that time, he was a defendant in the state's case against "Truly Special," another MLM. He also has been the subject of two previous Kansas orders dealing with securities fraud in relation to Truly Special, and another business, "Renaissance Designer Gallery Products."

According to a statement by Assistant Attorney General Terry D. Hamblin, who is heading the investigation,

"The Kansas Attorney General has definitely not said 'there is no pyramid problem.' In fact, we believe there is."

In addition to the illegal pyramid scheme issues, the state is investigating the company for deceptive trade practices.
